As Avian Bird Flu is making headlines, it is estimated to cost the US Food industry in the upwards of $1 billion.
USDA detected the outbreak of Avian Bird Flu, a highly pathogenic H2N5 virus strain in 14 states including Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin and had already killed 38.9 million birds. This flu has wiped out 40% of egg laying farms in Iowa, which is the number one egg producing state in the US.
The H2N5 virus strain is believed to be brought in the Midwest through Mississippi Flyway. It is suspected to be spreading in one of two ways: directly, by bringing flock into contact with infected feces; or indirectly, through wind-borne particles in a confined facility.
The flu has affected the entire egg industry forcing food manufacturers and food chains to brace for higher prices, shortages and plan for alternatives. Industrial use of egg is versatile and affects many applications from Baking, Salad Dressing, to Meat Analogues and Nutritional.
